REVIEW: Darphin Aromatic Purifying Balm

There was a time I was at my wits end with my breakouts – my chin, in particular. It would NOT STOP breaking out. I would wake up with 1-5 new superificial, dinky, poppable pimples every day! I went off birth control a few months before, so my skin started to freak out. I decided to buy this pricy little thing when a friend of mine recommended it as a holy grail item for her that she has repurchased for the past couple of years. Is it worth the purchase? I’ll let you know.

Darphin is a pricey brand found in majority of Shoppers Drug Marts in Canada or online ($90CAD, $106 after tax; $70 online). Aside from a strong recommendation from a friend, it captured my interest because it claims to be an all natural brand that contains the best quality ingredients. It is also a European brand, meaning their cosmetic filter of crap ingredients is far superior than that of North American products.

Doesn’t it all sound awesome? (It’s important to note that this isn’t for those searching for cruelty free brands. I’ve read that Darphin follows product policies depending on the countries it wants to sell it to – so some countries it’s cruelty free, others, it’s not)

IMG_5661First off, this product is only 15ml for the price 😮
HOWEVER:
1. You definitely do not need a lot of this product when you use it; the instructions say you need a size equivalent to a grain of rice, rub it so it melts, and massage it into your face and neck. I use around 3 grains worth, sometimes 2 if I put on emu oil before hand (which I prefer because I feel like the product massages over more surface area and I use less, plus emu oil is a great carrier oil for products to sink into your skin past the epidermis to your dermis). I would say the 1 grain worth would make sense if you just tap it everywhere.
2. It is a balm; the ingredients are preserved well so the potency is there and will last until you decide to melt it yourself; This is what also makes the product last for a long time.
3. You’re only supposed to use it 1-3 times a week; follow this and it will last even longer.
4. My skin surprisingly feels moisturized the next day despite the small amount you use.

The smell – is divine. Earthy, aromatic, herbally…. Mmm, I love the smell. It might not be for everyone though! The scent does go away rather quickly after rubbing it into your skin. I like taking a wiff of it before putting it on (it also recommends to do that!)

Usage: I have been using it for around a month* now. Have I noticed any of the claims the product makes for my skin?

Radiant, Purified and clarified skin: I have definitely noticed radiance, purity and clarity right after I rubbed it onto my face and in the morning when I wake up
Healthy looking skin for a more even complexion: My skin became more even tone in an instant, and again, reflected in the morning as well
Reduced imperfections: The multiple mini breakouts I was experiencing on my face reduced in pain, frequency and inflammation size (Not including cystic breakouts, however my friend who recommended it says it helped with her)
*Note: Although it has been a month, you’d think the amount of product would decrease significantly. Wrong! I’ve barely used 1/5th of the product (First week I used it every night, then switched to the 1-3 times a week routine for the following weeks)

Rating: 4/5

Overall opinion: I would repurchase. Despite its very, very, deceptive size, it surprised me how much I still have in the tiny pot after using it for a good 4-6 weeks. From the mental list in my head of items I have tried, the only product I can think of that may give the same result (and is way cheaper) is the Andalou Naturals Turmeric + Vitamin C Serum (maybe not so much with breakouts, and how long it lasts, but to make your skin even tone and glowy). I find it helps the slightest bit with breakout prevention, but not 100%. I still get the little pimples here and there, but definitely not as much as before when I first started to break out again.
If you have the money (or someone else does *wink wink*) I’d say it’s worth giving it a shot. I do not feel like I lack moisture in the morning, the radiance in my skin stays, and the breakouts become less angry. It does everything it claims to do for my dehydrated, somewhat oily, acne prone skin, but I wouldn’t condense it to people with my skin type; I believe anyone could use it, and you’ll be happy with the result.

What are your experiences with the Darphin Aromatic Purifying Balm? Any other Darphin products you’d recommend to try?

xo, M
