ByWishtrend Mandelic Acid 5% Skin Prep Water Review

In my personal opinion, tried and true, chemical exfoliants are the most effective products when dealing with indented scarring without breaking the bank.

I don’t have terribly picked scars, but they are quite noticeable in certain lighting. They have plagued me for many years after having cystic acne, and truthfully, I thought I would have them forever unless I spent crazy money on some type of professional treatment. However, it wasn’t until a lovely friend of mine gifted me an AHA (Alpha Hydroxy Acid) toner that I started noticing my face becoming smoother and my breakouts lessening after every use! Within a month I saw results; not perfect, but my goodness, did it make me feel a hell of a lot better and more hopeful for my skin’s future.

AHAs and I have had a very intimate relationship ever since, however, AHAs can be a bit uncompromising. Depending on the formulation and concentration of AHA, the product has potential to dry out your skin and make it more sensitive to the sun. It is precisely this reason that I wait until the end of summer to use chemical exfoliants. I’m avoiding the burn and potentially damaging my skin further than before.

This year I started using the ByWishtrend Mandelic Acid 5% Skin Prep Water* and have used it consistently every night for about 2 months.

Now before we get into the review I’d like to say, I had no idea what mandelic acid even was! I’ve heard of glycolic, lactic, citric… never mandelic. This is a very new AHA treatment to me, so I absolutely had to use it for a while to really see and understand how it performs!

Usage

IMG_20171014_151733Like I mentioned, I’ve been using this product every night for about 2 months, occasionally in the morning, when I felt like it.

When using this product for the first time, I was pleasantly surprised. It did NOT dry out my face! The only experience with AHA toners I have are the Neostrata Level 2 Toner (8% glycolic acid, 2% salicylic acid) and Pixi Glow Tonic. Neostrata was amazing though at smoothing out my scars within a month, and the Pixi one was just meh (yeah I said it). Both of them dried out my face a lot, and I never enjoyed using them, but I persisted because of the results.

Although it’s 5% AHA and it’s supposed to be more gentle than the average chemical exfoliant, I find the ByWishtrend Mandelic Acid 5% Skin Prep Water stings my face a bit. Not all the time, but I do have occasions where I’m definitely feeling the toner on my face. My suspicion is that there is some type of cut or “open wound” on my face from a zit I may have popped.

Results

It’s VERY hard to capture on camera, but the indented marks on my cheeks have smoothed out a lot with using this product for a month. The only marker I have to really say there is a difference, is when I see friends and they comment on how smooth my skin has become! That’s always a good sign, right? (For reference on how my indented scars used to look, check out my post REVIEW: Chosungah 22 Bounce Up Pact Ultra SPF 50 PA+++ 02 Sand Beige – you can see on the left side of the photo a bit of the indentation I had going on. I’ll try to post up a more recent photo, but basically I barely notice it anymore on my face. Usually in bad lighting (and awkward head positioning) you can see the shadow of the marks. My face has become VERY smooth since.)

Also, this acid toner does not make my skin look weak. Typically, using acid toners every night is a bit much, and you really notice your skin thinning out. My skin has not looked sallow at all from using this product, instead I definitely have noticed a slight brightened look to my face. I can’t say even-toned; I am using an AHA that could still cause irritation, so redness isn’t surprising.

Now what I didn’t expect this product to do was improve my acne. MY CHIN IS CLEAR AND HAS STAYED CLEAR (except for ye olde time of the month). This is unheard of! I almost ALWAYS have some type of punk ass pimple on my chin, and none haven’t popped up to cause s!@# in a while. The only thing I changed and stayed consistent in my skincare routine is this toner.

New Love

ByWishtrend’s Mandelic Acid 5% Skin Prep Water is my favourite acid toner to date! Little goes a long way with the product, a comfortable application (no tingly or stinging sensation), it does not dry out my skin or thin it out, and it surprised me by keeping my acne at bay. I am still using this product as my nightly toner, I have seen nothing but good results from it and I still got a lot of product to go through!

I’m currently using the Klairs Midnight Blue Youth Activating Drop in my night time routine, and apparently this product with the Skin Prep Water is supposed to be the ultimate duo for tackling dull skin! I have only used the combination a handful of times so far. It’s not a super drastic life-changing difference in one go, however, I DO notice that my skin looks a tad more full (like not thinned out and weak), bright, and less read (not completely though).
