Dynamic Duo? Klairs Freshly Juiced Vitamin Drop & Freshly Juiced Vitamin E Face Mask

If you follow the Korean beauty scene, the latest skincare advice is to use vitamin C and vitamin E products together in your skincare routine. They have been talked about as a power couple and it is highly recommended to combine the two to really maximize both their skincare benefits.

The Benefits of Vitamin C and E Together

  • Boosting vitamin C effects on your skin
  • Protecting skin from sun damage
  • Neutralize any free radicals that occur after sun exposure
  • Help synthesize collagen
  • Maintain the cross-links between the collagen fibers

I happen to have two Klairs products that have been recommended to go together! Klairs Freshly Juiced Vitamin Drop and Freshly Juiced Vitamin E Mask.

The Controversy Combining Niacinamide with Vitamin C

If you noticed on the Vitamin E Mask, niacinamide is one of the key ingredients. Some beauty companies advise consumers not to pair any niacinamide to vitamin C products; both combined will neutralize the other, rendering both ingredients ineffective in your skincare routine.

The only time I have heard otherwise:

  • Charlotte Cho from Soko Glam state that Niacinamide actually helps stabilize vitamin C and they’re very safe to use together
  • Paula Begoun explaining that old studies on their incompatibility were due to using unstable formulas, and today’s studies show the formulations they test with today are stable
  • Wishtrend conflicted itself; they had a youtube video saying to not combine the two ingredients together, yet on their Vitamin E Mask page, it describes how Niacinamide helps stabilize vitamin C and its own benefits are enhanced when combined

I’ve been using these 2 products as part of my night time skincare routine for a few months now, and I feel comfortable enough to finalize my thoughts on these products and how they work together.

To piece this review nicely, I’m going to start by individually reviewing the products and finalize my thoughts by how they perform together at the end. Also, because I’m reviewing two products, I didn’t include the section on claims and ingredients list, but I left links down below for you to check it out yourself.

Klairs Freshly Juiced Vitamin Drop

KEY INGREDIENTS

Vitamin C

  • A powerful antioxidant that our body uses to create collagen and elastin
  • Has a brightening effect by reducing the production of melanin which causes dark acne spots, and provides an overall even skin tone
  • Removes dead skin cells and improves absorption rate of other skincare products
  • Produces ceramide which help strengthen skin’s barrier
  • Overall helps reduce inflammatory symptoms
  • Recommended use is at nighttime because it will destabalize once your skin is exposed to sun, and it is better suited as an after-sun care ingredient

Ascorbic acid is the the best form of vitamin C to topically treat your skin, but is very sensitive to destabilization.  It must be stored in a dark, cool place because it can be easily oxidized and could cause more damage to your skin than good if it is not stored properly. A high percentage of vitamin C could also irritate your skin as well.

The Klairs Freshly Juiced Vitamin Drop contains 5% ascorbic acid (2nd ingredient) . The amount is only 5% because Klairs is a brand that is focused on catering to sensitive skin, so it’s a suitable starter amount for those getting into Vitamin C.

Centella asiatica extract (5th ingredient)

  • It is from the Gotu Kola plant that has been historically used in medicine to treat various skin conditions
  • Helps stimulate collagen and skin tissue
  • Boosts antioxidant activity at the site of wounds
  • Increases blood circulation

Considering what we know about vitamin C and its sensitivities, I’m surprised Klairs went with clear packaging for their Freshly Juiced Vitamin Drop. Needless to say I keep this serum in my cabinet where it’s dark and can escape the humidity that may build up after a shower. The texture of this serum surprisingly feels oily. I only need three drops for my face and neck (provided you prepped your skin with double cleansing and a hydrating toner). Almost immediately after application, I notice my face feels slightly heated, but not in an irritated way.

Immediate results after application: skin tone looks even and bright.

Can be used as a:

  • Sleeping mask (how I use it)
  • Wash off mask
  • Light moisturizer – or mix a tad with your current moisturizer to create a balm like product

KEY INGREDIENTS

Vitamin E (Tocopheryl Acetate, 4th ingredient)

  • Supposed to help increase absorption rate of vitamin C
  • Boosts skin’s protective function to prevent foreign substances from entering the skin
  • Soothes skin from inflammation and softens the skin
  • Shields skin from sun damage

Niacinamide (5th ingredient)

  • 2% concentration in the Klairs Freshly Juiced Vitamin E Mask; anything higher could induce a burning sensation
  • Helps with dullness, fine lines, large pores
  • Prevents melanin forming from acne spots or dark spots
  • Contributes to the overall health of the skin and promoting a good skin barrier

Adenosine (21st ingredient)

  • Soothing and skin-restoring agent
  • Helps boost levels of collagen and elastin in the body
  • Effective in wound healing and regeneration
  • Energizes the skin’s surface to look smoother and younger

This has a jello-like texture and from far away it smells fresh, up close it smells like black licorice. For me personally, this smell is reminiscent of my youth from trying sambuca *gags*. Once you start spreading it, it melts into a creamy essence, and a little goes a long way with the product. I love that when you open the jar, the product looks brand new because it molds back into a flat surface. At first I did not care for this product, thinking it would be like the other overnight masks I’ve tried. I found sleeping masks heavily exaggerated my pores and not really last on the skin the next morning. But the more I used it, the more I became a fan. I find the mask to be a lovely concoction of good skincare ingredients. Aside from the key ingredients, the Vitamin E Mask also contains sodium hyluronate, ceramide NP, centella asiatica extract, and arginine! The Klairs Freshly Juiced Vitamin E Mask still leaves my face feeling soft and when I rinse my face with water in the morning, I can feel a bit of the product slipping on my face. Also my pores don’t look overly huge, they just look normal.

Immediate results after application: it’s very cooling once applied and my skin tingles just a tad. My skin looks more even and bright, and it looks like I have the honey / glass skin that’s a popular look in KBeauty.

Long-Term Results Together

IMG_20180220_125716.jpg

For my hyper-pigmentation, I have not noticed anything super significant. I’ve been using these two products in my skincare since the end of October, and I still have some hyper-pigmentation marks on my face from that time that only reduced slightly in colour. I gave it a good run before including any products to tackle this issue, and still I barely saw progress. I’m suspecting it has to do with the low percentage of ascorbic acid; 5% seems too little to show significant changes. I started using the COSRX Galactomyces 95 Whitening Power Essence in December and I feel like that’s the reason why my hyper-pigmentation is actually starting to fade, and I’ve also been using the ByWishtrend Teca 1% Barrier Cream which really cuts down the redness and mark size after a popped pimple.

In terms of combining the two products, the skincare tip does have merit. The more I researched vitamin C, the more docs came up with the benefits of products formulated vitamin C, E and ferulic acid (an ingredient not in either list). With the combination of the Freshly Juiced products, also I still feel like the 5% is too little to show the true potential of vitamin C, and that not having vitamin E already formulated with the product will potentially not give proper results. This is just my suspicion.

Overall, I still like how both the Freshly Juiced Vitamin Drop and Vitamin E Mask have been making my skin look brighter, feel hydrated, plumper and overall healthier. I barely get darkness in my t-zone from dehydration and waking up with chapped up skin from my dry apartment. My apartment is so dry, I have 2 humidifiers running at all times. With the Vitamin E Mask, I actually wake up not feeling uncomfortable from the tightness I used to get. Usually in the winter I up my coverage with my foundation routine, and I’ve actually been enjoying wearing a lighter layer of product. My skin looks bright and soft in the morning, something I haven’t experienced in a long time in the winter. I can’t yet speak on how these both perform with protecting my skin from sun damage, because I started using these products during the coldest time of the year. Hopefully my beach vacation is coming soon, and I can bring these products to see how they help my skin after being out in a stronger sun.

Overall, I most definitely recommend trying out both the Klairs Freshly Juiced Vitamin Drop and the Klairs Freshly Juiced Vitamin E Mask. I feel like if you have super red, irritated skin, you may notice more of a difference than I did. Just keep in mind if you have sensitive skin, both give off some type of sensation right after application.

I hope this review helped you out! Let me know in the comments section if you found it dramatically helped with your hyper-pigmentation, because I really think it didn’t do much for that, or if you combine one of the products with something else to get maximum skincare benefits!

xo, M
