Klairs Supple Preparation Facial Toner Scented vs. Unscented!

If you’re a frequent reader of my blog, you’ll notice that the Klairs Supple Preparation Facial Toner has been mentioned a couple of times or so in my posts. If you know me in person, I may have demanded that you buy it at some point. But I’ve never really got into detail as to what it is about this toner that makes me love it so much. I got sent Klairs Supple Preparation Unscented Toner * to try out, so I thought this would be a good time to go in depth about both toners!

How Klairs Made my Skin Actually Supple

Before I show you the ingredient lists and compare, everything about the claims has done what it said for me.

*Anecdotal Insert*
My skin while being a flight attendant looked… Dehydrated, to be nice. To be mean, I felt like an old hag. I know that seems extreme, but when YOU look at YOURSELF and notice an incredible change in your skin in a very very short span of time, it can’t be helped but to describe oneself as that. I went from being the classic, super-oil-slick-faced, fry-an-egg skin to dry-AF-let-me-just-submerge-my-face-in-water type of skin.

Klairs Supple Preparation Facial Toner was and is my first hydrated toner love. At first I was scared to use it because I’m used to the classic astringent toners most commonly found on this side of the ocean, so the consistency threw me off (I may be half Korean, but my reactions are very North American). However, my increase in use also paralleled to my increase in love. I could tell that this toner was doing something because my enlarged pores weren’t looking like dragged slits, they actually looked like pores. Boy, was I happy to see that shape again! To add to that, this doesn’t make my pores look enlarged at all, it actually minimized them a tad; if I do a toner mask, they look even smaller! I pretty much got the whole shabang of this toner: hydration, even tone, softness, healthy looking.

Ingredient Highlights & Comparison

Highlights
Here I listed some notable ingredients (to me) that are in both the Klairs Supple Preparation Facial Toner and Unscented Toner!

I’m quoting ingredient descriptions from Special Chem and Paula’s Choice. I trust they have a good sum up of the ingredients functions. Here’s a bit about them:
Special Chem: Has many websites providing technical data on materials and ingredients; like a social platform for scientific professionals as well.
Paula’s Choice Ingredient Dictionary: This section of Paula’s website provides an extensive list of researched ingredients; Each ingredient page has a reference list of scientific studies, especially recently available ones related to it. (Note: I don’t take Paula’s Choice research as the end all of what a product or ingredient is about)

Phyto-Oligo“Acts as an anti-inflammatory, soothing and moisturizing agent. It contains amino acids, anthraquinones, enzymes, hormones, lignin, minerals, salicylic acid, saponins, sterols, sugars and vitamins. Provides superior soothing and moisturizing ability to keep skin elastic and soft. Offers good skin feel and good absorbency.”

Natto Gum: “[Forms] a supple, cohesive, and continuous layer. This layer/film has water-binding properties that leave a silky and smooth effect on the skin.”

Beta Glucan: “…considered an excellent ingredient for improving the look of redness and other signs of sensitive skin.”

Sodium Hyaluronate:Salt form of skin-replenishing ingredient hyaluronic acid; considered more effective for skin than pure hyaluronic acid due to its greater compatibility.”

Centella Asiatica Extract:Antioxidant-rich extract that may be listed on labels as asiatic acid, hydrocotyl, or gotu kola. It is a source of amino acids and has soothing properties. Concentrations of 5% show notable improvement in skin’s moisture content.”

Glycyrrhiza Glabra (Licorice) Root ExtractOne of the active, skin-soothing components of licorice extract.” (I’ve also seen this as a main ingredient in products targeted to age spots and dark pigmentation)

Panthenol
:Alcohol form of the B vitamin pantothenic acid. Panthenol is used in skincare products as a humectant because of its ability to attract and hold moisture. ”

Arginine
:An amino acid considered essential to human development. It has antioxidant properties.”

Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate
:Stable, water-soluble form of vitamin C that functions as an antioxidant and is potentially effective for brightening an uneven skin tone.

The rest of the ingredients (as listed below) also serve a purpose as skin conditioning agents, and I haven’t found (aside from the concerning list of essential oils) anything too concerning in the formula and if it takes away the purpose of the product. Overall the formulation has a ton of ingredients aimed at soothing, hydrating, brightening, moisturizing, and smoothing out the skin.

Comparison
Now the reason why Klairs released an unscented version is because some of their customers are still too sensitive to the essential oils in the toner, despite Klairs being a line specifically for those with sensitive skin! I’ve personally always benefited from essential oils, especially when beauty providers know how to formulate their products properly with them. However even at safe levels, products with essential oils can’t always appeal to everyone’s skin-type, too many different genetic makeups to make it possible!

SCENTED
Water, Butylene Glycol, Dimethyl Sulfone, Betaine, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Natto Gum, Sodium Hyaluronate, Disodium EDTA, Centella Asiatica Extract, Glycyrrhiza Glabra (Licorice) Root Extract, Polyquaternium-51, Chlorphenesin, Tocopheryl Acetate, Carbomer, Panthenol, Arginine, Luffa Cylindrica Fruit/Leaf/Stem Extract, Beta-Glucan, Althaea Rosea Flower Extract, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract, Hydroxyethylcellulose, Portulaca Oleracea Extract, Lysine HCL, Proline, Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate, Acetyl Methionine, Theanine, Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Oil, Eucalyptus Globulus Leaf Oil, Pelargonium Graveolens Flower Oil, Citrus Limon (Lemon) Peel Oil, Citrus Aurantium Dulcis (Orange) Peel Oil, Cananga Odorata Flower Oil, Copper Tripeptide-1

UNSCENTED
Water, Butylene Glycol, Dimethyl Sulfone, Betaine, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Natto Gum,Sodium Hyaluronate, Disodium EDTA, Centella Asiatica Extract, Glycyrrhiza Glabra (Licorice) Root Extract, Polyquaternium-51, Chlorphenesin, Tocopheryl Acetate, Carbomer, Panthenol, Arginine, Luffa Cylindrica Fruit/Leaf/Stem Extract, Beta-Glucan, Althaea Rosea Flower Extract, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract, Hydroxyethylcellulose, Portulaca Oleracea Extract, Lysine HCL, Proline, Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate, Acetyl Methionine, Theanine, Copper Tripeptide-1

After comparing the ingredients list, they literally took out the plant fragrances and did not add anything else. I’m not sure if the removal of essential oils means that the product will spoil faster (I don’t think so, they have an alcohol preservative Chlorphenesin higher in the list than the essential oils were), or that the essential oils really were to give it that signature Klairs scent! Either way, the toner is a great formulation of skin-soothing, hydrating, and moisturizing ingredients AKA you don’t have to think twice about what you’re putting on your face anymore!

Usage

Just like any product tester, I applied each one on one side of my face for 2 weeks.

It actually didn’t even take me that long to notice the differences between the two, but it didn’t hurt to use it an extra few days to confirm!

Scent

Surprisingly after applying both on my face at the same time, I smelled the unscented one more. This just confirms that “unscented” just comes from removing the essential oils that were the main fragrance components from the formulation; they did not add anything to make it truly unscented. I find this a good thing, it would just be an unnecessary ingredient.

I can’t even remember which one is which… Perhaps the top is SCENTED, bottom is UNSCENTED

Texture

You cannot tell the difference. I’m still having a hard time telling!

Performance

Unscented definitely sinks in faster than Scented. Scented takes a while longer to absorb, so your face looks more moist a tad longer. Otherwise this does go away when you pat it in.

After using both for a week I noticed the Unscented side of my face the skin feels slightly drier than the Scented side, but in terms of the inner feels, it’s the same. At first I thought I was sleeping on my left side a lot more; I asked my bf, and he says he finds me lying down on either side or on my back a lot. Thus it is confirmed, the Unscented is not leaving as moisturizing of a residue that the Scented is!

My younger sister’s opinion on the Scented one who’s an oily-skinned gal: Doesn’t do much to control oil, but noticed her face is very smooth (so detailed).

Which one is best for you?

After trying out both toners for the past week or two, here are my recommendations:

Go for the Scented if:

  • Your skin can handle essential oils
  • You don’t mind that it takes a tad longer to sink into the skin (it’s seriously not that much longer)
  • You want a more moisturized finish

Go for Unscented if:

  • Your skin is very reactive to essential oils
  • You don’t mind that it is not truly unscented
  • It sinks into the skin faster
  • You do not want any type of finish, you just want it to do its thang

Because Klairs states that Unscented is a lighter texture and sinks into the skin faster, it is more suitable for combination to oily skin, whereas the Scented version may be preferable for the normal to dry skin types. Honestly, I think any skin type can buy either one, it just depends on your preferences!

Overall, both the Klairs Supple Preparation Facial Toner Scented and Unscented are both great formulations and with the newly unscented one, you really don’t have to think twice about the ingredients list and if there’s anything unnecessary in the formulation!

Hopefully this comparative review helped you out in deciding a) do you even want to buy this toner, and/or b) which one should you go for!
