One of the last sunscreens I purchased in 2022 is La Roche Posay Anthelios UVMUNE 400 Hydrating Cream SPF50+. It’s been very hyped in the skincare world, supposedly offering high UVA protection ever in the La Roche Posay Anthelios lineup in a cosmetically elegant formula.

INGREDIENTS: AQUA / WATER, DIISOPROPYL SEBACATE, ALCOHOL DENAT., ETHYLHEXYL SALICYLATE, ETHYLHEXYL TRIAZONE, BIS ETHYLHEXYLOXYPHENOL METHOXYPHENYL TRIAZINE, DIISOPROPYL ADIPATE, PEG 8, DIPROPYLENE GLYCOL, C12 22 ALKYL ACRYLATE/HYDROXYETHYLACRYLATE COPOLYMER, GLYCERIN, DROMETRIZOLE TRISILOXANE, ALUMINUM STARCH OCTENYLSUCCINATE, BUTYL METHOXYDIBENZOYLMETHANE, METHOXYPROPYLAMINO CYCLOHEXENYLIDENE ETHOXYETHYLCYANOACETATE, SILICA, TOCOPHEROL, DIETHYLAMINO HYDROXYBENZOYL HEXYL BENZOATE, ACRYLATES COPOLYMER, ACRYLATES/C10 30 ALKYL ACRYLATE CROSSPOLYMER, CAPRYLYL GLYCOL, HYDROXYACETOPHENONE, PENTAERYTHRITYL TETRA DI T BUTYL HYDROXYHYDROCINNAMATE, SODIUM POLYACRYLATE, TEREPHTHALYLIDENE DICAMPHOR SULFONIC ACID, TRIETHANOLAMINE, TRISODIUM ETHYLENEDIAMINE DISUCCINATE
As listed above, La Roche Posay Anthelios UVMUNE 400 SPF50+ Hydrating Cream has a large list of organic UV filters, including the brand new Mexoryl 400.
Mexoryl 400 is the star UV filter in the entire La Roche Posay UVMUNE 400 range. According to L’Oreal’s press release,
“UVMune 400 is L’Oréal first sun filtering technology, its biggest suncare innovation in 30 years to effectively protect the skin against ultra-long UVA rays, the 30% of solar rays that have so far been insufficiently filtered.
…UVMune 400 is a technology that provides broad spectrum photoprotection.“

UVMUNE 400 increases the solar filtration range by 20nm, thus blocks the ultra-long UVA rays from 380nm (friendly reminder: UVAII 320 – 340nm, UVA1 340 – 400nm).
Aside from the long list of UV filters, I can spot Tocopherol (Vitamin E) in the formula. It’s also fragrance free. One call-out is the denatured alcohol 3rd on the list. For me personally, this ingredient is usually a hit or miss for me when in formulas. My skin tends to dry out more quickly unless I moisturize my skin really well.
My Experience with La Roche Posay Anthelios UVMUNE 400 Hydrating Cream SPF50+
TEXTURE: Light cream with a slight tint of yellow.
APPLICATION: Applied 4 pumps all in one go all over my face and neck.
FINISH: Skin looks like I applied a moisturizer on. There are shimmering particles in it that make my face appear glowy, but not overly shiny.
FEEL: Light, feels like a non-greasy cream moisturizer.
STINGS EYES? No.
UNDER MAKEUP: Performs fine on my drier skin type when I use concealer. However I notice if I powder, my skin dries up more quickly. I suspect it’s the denatured alcohol in the formula. It has been a trend throughout my skincare journey that whenever I use powder with something that is high in denatured alcohol.
Final Thoughts on La Roche Posay Anthelios UVMUNE 400 Hydrating Cream SPF50+
Pros
- High UVA protection sunscreen
- Can use as a moisturizing sunscreen in warmer weather
- Does not feel greasy
- Does not make my skin look oily
- The most cosmetically elegant European sunscreen I have ever used
Cons
- Because my skin becomes sensitized to high amounts of denatured alcohol, I find my skin feels drier during the day
- It contains old-school UV filters (Avobenzone and Octisalate), which I am more sensitive to

Hi there!
Thanks for your point of view about this cream. I just purchased it myself, and as a newbie to SPF skincare I do have a few questions. Do I still do my usual skincare routine first, and then apply this little guy after? Or does it play out my usual moisturiser? And as for makeup, if used— does it go on after I’ve applied this cream, or before? I’d be super grateful for an answer!
Thank you! X
Gabriella
Sunscreen should always be applied as the last step! I find right now in the summer I can skip a heavier moisturizer and use just the LRP UVMUNE 400 Hydrating Cream SPF50+ over a lighter gel cream. If your skin is not as dry as mine you could probably just skip the gel cream altogether. Always best to try the various ways on your skin! I must say, it is quite nice having a very effortless morning skincare routine when sunscreen can moisturize well.
4 pumps for face and neck? I think I overapply it cause I always use 4-5 pumps for my face only.
I think the amount varies from person to person. I’m under the impression not everyone needs a 1/4 tsp amount because we all have different face sizes and shapes! I recall Lab Muffin doing a video on this
