La Roche Posay Anthelios Ultra-Fluid Lotion SPF50+ – New Canadian Version (comparing it to Europe’s Shaka Fluid) SUNSCREEN SUNDAY #17

When I was first notified of La Roche Posay’s reformulation of their Anthelios Ultra-Fluid Lotion SPF60, my first thought was, “IS IT THE SAME AS SHAKA FLUID!?!?!?”

In short, LRP Canada on their Instagram informed me it was the same formula. I looked at both ingredients list, and there is a difference between the two, so it’s not 100% the same. In addition, I discovered the PPD is not the same either, so don’t expect this to be like Shaka Fluid’s PPD 46 that I originally thought despite the slight differences.

Either way, I have got a good feel of the new La Roche Posay Anthelios Ultra-Fluid Lotion SPF50+ and am ready to review! I have also compared its ingredients list to the Shaka Fluid if you’re like me and were interested in the similarities and differences.

In short, first 10 inactive ingredients are the same, 5 of the same ingredients are in different order, and there is 1 different ingredient:

Canada – Disodium Edta – viscosity
Europe – Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride – emollient

Skinthusiast Perspective…

Uvinul T 150 is not a regulated UV filter in Canada, so that’s why we see Homosalate and Ensulizole in our ingredient list instead as extra UVB filters. Aside from Uvinul T 150, I do not understand why Mexoryl SX is not in our formula and we could not have the additional emollient ingredient. But then again, I’m not a chemist, and cannot assume we can have it all “cooked” together.

As shown in the first screenshot, La Roche Posay Canada’s Instagram stated this is the same formula as Shaka Fluid, it is just named differently here. However after comparing the ingredients list, this is incorrect. I don’t blame the Social Media Manager not knowing, their job is to mostly know the Canadian products. I also emailed LRP Canada’s customer service to ask further about this sunscreen compared to the Shaka Fluid and received no answer (this was months ago). After doing the digging myself with the ingredients and filters, it is clear it is not the same formula, but it is pretty dang close! I still can’t help but feel a little disappointed the Canadian formula doesn’t have Mexoryl SX though, it’s in Ombrelle’s sunscreens (a Canadian sunscreen brand that also uses the patented Mexoryl UV filers).

In the next screenhot, LRPCa provided the PPD of their new Anthelios Ultra-Fluid Lotion SPF50+ is 35. This makes sense, considering we don’t have the additional high-protection UVA filter Mexoryl SX. This blog post by a French independent lab however tested the rating of the Shaka Fluid. Their test results showed that the Shaka Fluid’s PPD was a 27! Everything just becomes more confusing, doesn’t it? Either way, PPD of 27 or 35 is still better than 16, and my experience with the La Roche Posay Anthelios Ultra-Fluid Lotion was overall a very positive one!

My Experience with La Roche Posay Anthelios Ultra-Fluid Lotion SPF50+

PACKAGING:  Opaque white plastic bottle, twist off cap with a small spout.

CONSISTENCY:  Thin fluid.

FRAGRANCE: None.

APPLICATION: Slides on very easily with a light touch.

FINISH: Glowy.

FEEL: Emollient, like my skin has a moisturizer on it.

STINGS EYES? Surprisingly, it does not!

WHITECAST / TINTED? No, there are no mineral UV filters that could potentially leave a cast. In addition, the Silica, a white powdery substance, is not leaving a white streaky film.

WATER RESISTANT? Yes – 80 minutes.

SKIN BENEFITS? This has denat. alcohol in the formula, but the sunsreen still manages to add extra moisture to my skin. I have actually managed to wear this without moisturizer in the summer! In winter, this has worn fairly comfortably throughout the day, but I do gravitate to “greasier” sunscreens to avoid any dry feeling all together.

UNDER MAKEUP: Does not add or subtract to longevity for my drier skin type.

Final Thoughts on La Roche Posay Anthelios Ultra-Fluid Lotion SPF50+

PROS:

  • High protection – SPF50+ PPD 35
  • Easy to apply the 2mg/cm2
  • Feels light
  • Can wear it as a moisturizing SPF in the summer
  • This does not sting my eyes

CONS:

  • Sometimes stings my skin if I used an active that impaired my skin a little bit (eg. too much chemical exfoliation)

IN-BETWEEN FEELS

  • Bit pricey per ml, but it’s a sunscreen I would wear everyday if I didn’t have such a collection of SPF 😀
  • Sometimes I look too glowy, borderline oily in the summer time
  • I don’t expect the social media manager to know everything about their products, but I wouldn’t go telling customers that it’s the same formula as the Shaka Fluid in Europe

The La Roche Posay Anthelios Ultra-Fluid Lotion SPF50+ definitely knocks my other high protecting sunscreen out of the park when it comes to cosmetic elegance. I went through a bottle of this no problem in the summer without issues. Also the fact that I’m able to wear this without moisturizer underneath just amazes me (in the summer). Overall, the La Roche Posay Anthelios Ultra-Fluid Lotion SPF50+ is great despite the price point and it’s in my top favourite sunscreens so far.

August 2018 Roundup

Basic BG Statement: I CAN’T believe we’re near the end of summer! Seriously, as you get older, time passes so quickly. Anyone else feeling the same way? Anywho, here is August’s roundup!

FAVOURITES

IMG_20180909_123751.jpg

Paula’s Choice Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Liquid – I totally get the hype. I like how gentle it is that I can bring it up to my eye area without worry. I’ve repeated this a couple of times to friends, but my face looks very poreless, smooth and “juicy” when I use this product. I want to say the texture is borderline toner to essence. Like an acid essence. It doesn’t dry out my skin at all, and I can wait a few minutes before adding other products.

Riversol SPF 30 Lightweight Broad Spectrum Sunscreen – This has been a very pleasant sunscreen to use. Despite the mica in it to create a natural shimmer, I find it doesn’t blend too shiny or white on my skin. Having said that, I don’t think the tint will 100% adapt to your skin type. Definitely a sunscreen meant for drier skin types, because I do notice it adds an extra layer of moisture on my skin. Until the weather becomes colder and I become a little more lighter, I like using this under my powder foundation.

La Roche Posay Anthelios Mineral Tinted Ultra-Fluid Lotion SPF 50 – It’s a bit pricey for the size, but I love how easy it is to apply without worrying about an obvious cast. This is the the sunscreen I reach for if I don’t want to wear any makeup, but I want some miniscule amount of evenness in my skin. It’s also great to wear at the gym!

I did a Sunscreen Week on my blog back in July, where I go more in depth about these sunscreens!

EMPTIES

SKINCARE

Consonant DHE Mask – This mask was REALLY good at cutting down the size and pain of very active zits! I mostly used this as a spot treatment, but occassionally all over the face. My skin didn’t feel dry from the clay, and it was fairly soft after washing the mask off. If you want a mask that doubles as a spot treatment, this is your go-to!
REVIEW: Consonant “One For All” Kit

COSRX Galactomyces 95 Whitening Power (Tone Balancing) Essence – I noticed such a difference in my skin the moment I incorporated this product into my routine! I stopped complaining about tightness in my skin, and my face felt smoother in texture. I was skeptical about essences, let alone Galactomyces Ferment Filtrate, but this essence performed really well. I bought the Secret Key essence instead of repurchasing this one however because I *did* give in to the nice packaging of it! Out of the two however, I prefer the texture of the COSRX one!
I’m Finally Sharing my Current Skincare Routines 2018

Too Cool For School Xakziuza Cleansing Water – Better than their Eye & Makeup Remover Counterpart. My face didn’t tingle, which normally happens when I use a product with micelles in it. I won’t repurchase because this also has a strong scent and I’m trying out Riversol’s Micellar Water at the moment.

Make P:rem UV Defense ME Blue Ray Sun Gel SPF 50+ PA++++ – Not completely empty, but I can’t get the rest of the product out! Argh! >_< Either way, this is a great chemical sunscreen. My face always looked even, also during days if I was outside in the sun all day. I also did a dedicated review on this sunscreen if you want more details!
SUNSCREEN WEEK [Day #1]: Make P:rem UV Defense Me Blue Ray Sun Gel SPF 50+ PA++++

Paula’s Choice Clinical Ultra-Rich Moisturizer – This was okay. When I first started using this, I felt like it was actually DRYING out my skin, and made the center of my face very discoloured. Now that the weather is a bit better and I have a different approach to my skincare routine, it’s doesn’t seem to do that anymore. I’m not saying this moisturizer is bad, I just think I’ve tried better moisturizers.

HAIR

Aveda Clove Color Conditioner – Already bought another one! Aveda has been my go-to since I discovered it for treating my coloured hair, and I can’t find anything else that’s easier and effective to use. Clove is what I use to keep the darkness of the ash brown in my hair. It’s been almost a month since I ran out of it, and I can tell my hair’s been getting lighter faster.
MICHXMASH & Vera Rapunzel’s Haircare Faves 2017

North American Hemp Co. Area 369 Hair Serum – I finally ran out of this guy! I really enjoyed this hair serum and my hair felt soft and detangled almost instantly. I would still have to apply this on a daily basis to make sure my ends were not feeling frayed. I just hate the packaging, What’s the point of it having a cap like this if the bottle doesn’t even let you squeeze!?

SAMPLES

Paula’s Choice Gentle Cleansing Cloths – Impressed how nicely saturated it was and GENTLE around my eyes! I’m not a makeup remover wipe kinda gal, but I definitely see the appeal of this one and would consider adding it into my cart the next time I buy PC products. I usually use wipes when I swatched a lot on my hands for a post/video!

Paula’s Choice Resist Super Antioxidant Concentrate Serum – I can’t even recall anything special about this other than the texture was cool. Sure, it has a nice list of ingredients, but I already use a vitamin C serum, and I like my Cerave PM Moisturizing Facial Lotion for my ceramides.

And that’s that for last month’s roundup!

Hope you enjoyed the read.

IMG_20180720_143809.jpg

CONSISTENCY:Watery.

APPLICATION: Spreads easily but feels kinda greasy on your fingers.
IMG_20180720_143322.jpg

FINISH: Satin type of finish.
IMG_20180720_143655.jpg

FEEL: Light.

STINGS EYES? No.

WHITECAST? The tint is slightly noticeable on my skin but I definitely do not rely on this for coverage, just to make sure there’s no whitecast. Word of caution to the super pale: this WILL be noticeable on you. Opt for the untinted one.

WATER RESISTANT? 40 minutes.

SKIN BENEFITS?
Nothing overly spectacular other than sun protection.

UNDER MAKEUP:
On par with how the Riversol SPF 30 Sunscreen performs. It Cosmetics CC Cream is able to blend evenly, but it’s not a lot of slip on the skin to help sheer it out like Elta Md SPF 30 Sunscreen.

WHERE TO BUY:
La Roche Posay’s Official Website

I originally bought this on a recommendation from one of the workers at Shoppers DrugMart for Nick to use when he cycles. It is very light, so it doesn’t feel like he’s adding something difficult to use in the morning. The tint surprised him at first, but it doesn’t provide coverage and his skin looks like his skin. It’s a nice sunscreen for sure, but $34 for 50ml is on the more expensive side.

Thank you SO MUCH for sticking around for Sunscreen Week! Hope it helped you out in choosing a sunscreen.
