INGREDIENTS:

IMG_20190402_104605.jpgAdansonia Digitata Seed Oil*, Alcohol, Aleurites Moluccana Seed Oil*, Algae Extract*, Allyl Heptanoate, Aluminum Hydroxide, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Cyclopentasiloxane, Dimethicone Crosspolymer, Dodecane, Euterpe Oleracea Fruit Extract*, Gamma Decalactone, Gamma Octalactone, Gamma- Nonalactone, Glycerin*, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil*, Heliotropine, Hydrogen Dimethicone, Iron Oxides, Isopropyl Myristate, Isopropyl Titanium Triisostearate, Mica, Polyamide-5, Polysilicone-11, Propylene Carbonate, Raspberry Ketone, Silica, Stearalkonium Hectorite, Synthetic Wax, Triethyl Citrate, Vanillin *Certified Organic Ingredients

CONSISTENCY: Liquidy / oily AF

FRAGRANCE: Heavy vanilla scent that *eventually* disappears.

APPLICATION: Shake 15-30 seconds before applying. I use 64% of 1/4 tsp (will explain this in a future post). Spready easily.

FINISH: Instant finish is shiny and face feels oily. Waited ~20 minutes for it to dry down.
IMG_20190402_105010.jpg

FEEL: Light and matte. Drying.

STINGS EYES? No.

WHITECAST? No.

TINTED? Yes. Even though it’s tinted one colour, it IS universal because it’s undetectable on my skin. I don’t even think this will even out redness or cover a cast from another SPF.

WATER RESISTANT? Yes – 40 minutes.

SKIN BENEFITS?
You’d think that because this is oil based it would be moisturizing. But because alcohol is the 2nd ingredient on the list, it actually gets rid of the greasy look on your face.

UNDER MAKEUP:
If you wait the 20-30 minutes, it grips onto my It Cosmetics CC Cream really well and mattifies it.

WHERE TO BUY:
Well.ca
Amazon.ca
iHerb

PROS:

  • Actually a universal tint
  • Affordable, but moreso for Americans
  • No cast

CONS:

  • On application, when I was gliding the product, it still managed to attract dead skin on my hands, like I did a little exfoliation.
  • Have to wait 20-30 minutes for it to dry down
  • Alcohol too high on the inci list
  • Face LOOKS dry, makes my fine lines look more noticeable, dry patches
  • Unpleasant to use

IN BETWEEN FEELS:

  • Mattifies cc cream; can be good or bad depending on skin type. For me it’s bad :p

Bare Republic Tinted Mineral Face SPF 30 Sunscreen Lotion was just okay. It’s great that this is a cruelty-free physical sunscreen with no cast whatsoever, but it’s very unpleasant to apply because of how liquidy/oily it is. For my dry skin, I don’t like it on my face at all because it makes my skin look dull. Perhaps in hotter, more humid weather it’ll perform better, but I’ll let oily-skinned peeps enjoy.

CANMAKE Mermaid Skin Gel UV SPF 50+ PA++++ Review

In search of a high protection, modern filtered, alcohol-free, fragrance-free, cosmetically elegant sunscreen, I stumbled across Canmake Mermaid Skin Gel UV SPF50+ PA++++. My friend brought me back a tube from Japan when he came back to visit, and I have repurchased it multiple times ever since!

INFORMATION ON CANMAKE MERMAID SKIN GEL UV SPF50+ PA++++

“Powerful, yet delectably moist
● SPF 50+ / PA++++
● Smooth gel without that roughness or stickiness characteristic of most sunscreens. Recommended for those who prefer a light, refreshing sunscreen.
Splash it on like a facial lotion – also serves as a make-up base
● Gel breaks down into a watery texture as you smooth it over your skin. After using face wash, this is all you need for complete skincare and UV protection.
*Can also be used after your usual facial lotion and other skincare products.
● Serves as a moisturizing make-up base with UV protection. Infuses your skin with moisture, helping your foundation to sit better and last longer.
● Use it on your body, as well as your face.
Skincare gel with 85% beautifying ingredients
● This pleasant watery gel contains 85% beautifying ingredients.
Easily portable tube format
● Sunscreen is most effective when reapplied frequently. Comes in an easily portable tube that makes it simple to adjust the amount you apply, so it’s perfect for reapplying sunscreen when you’re out and about.”

EXPERIENCE WITH THE CANMAKE MERMAID SKIN GEL UV SPF50+ PA++++

CONSISTENCY: Light gel-cream.

APPLICATION: Spreads easily like a light gel and and dries down quickly.
IMG_20181017_125723.jpg

FINISH: There is a very light, shimmery sheen to this product.
IMG_20181017_130150.jpg

FEEL: Light, slightly tacky. Also slightly drying if you do not prep your skin well.

STINGS EYES? No.

WHITECAST? It looks like there is a bit of a cast at first, but it matches my skin tone quickly.

WATER RESISTANT? No.

SKIN BENEFITS?
Based on their ingredients list, they have sodium hyaluronate, phytic acid, alpha glucan, ceramide, and a bunch of plant extracts near the end of the list. The first set of ingredients are nice and offer some moisturizing properties, but not enough on its own for my drier skin type.

UNDER MAKEUP:
I’m surprised how it is under my It Cosmetics CC Cream. I thought it wouldn’t do much since the CC Cream has a glow on its own. In light applications of the CC Cream, this sunscreen/primer’s finish is actually what dominates as the base. It’s as if I have the coverage of the CC Cream, but the finish is that of the primer. I likey likey likey.

FINAL THOUGHTS ON CANMAKE MERMAID SKIN GEL UV SPF50+ PA++++

CANMAKE Mermaid Skin Gel UV SPF 50+ PA++++ surprised me. Not for the UV protection, but how great of a primer it is! The fact it took away the It Cosmetics CC Cream shine and used it’s own… Well, damn! As a sunscreen, it’s light and creates a grease-free surface, but somewhat drying on my normal to dry skin if I don’t moisturize my skin properly before hand. The tube is pretty small to last primarily as a sunscreen, so I only use it as a primer on top of a different sunscreen I have – it’s as if it helps to layer your sunscreen protection more elegantly, rather than gooping the original SPF you have on your face! I definitely recommend trying it out if you can. Unfortunately online options can be more expensive than in store, so if you are ever in Japan and are eyeing it, get it!

ABOUT:
“The Klairs Soft Airy UV Essence SPF 50 PA++++ is an everyday sun protector for sensitive skin. As is it water-based, it holds a gel-type texture to give a soft weightless and light finish. Also with its high SPF and PA level, it completely guards the skin against UVA, UVB without leaving any greasiness or white cast. The Klairs Freshly Juiced Line is to brighten dull skin with the effect of the vitamin for sensitive skin. Apply Soft Aivy UV Essence after using this line to shield your skin from UV lights and enhance vitamin effects.

Price: $23 USD / ~$30 CAD
Amount: 80 ml / 2.7 fl oz

IMG_20180929_133114.jpg

CONSISTENCY: Light cream.

APPLICATION: Spreads easily and actually feels airy. No stickyness or greasiness as you apply.
IMG_20180929_132512.jpg

FINISH: Undetectable. It adds a slight moisturized look to the skin but nothing overly glowy.
IMG_20180921_131408.jpg

FEEL: Light.

STINGS EYES? No, but I prefer using a physical sunscreen around my eyes.

WHITECAST? No.

WATER RESISTANT? No.

SKIN BENEFITS?
Contains Niacinamide, Adenosine, Panthenol, Beta-Glucan, and Sea Buckthorn Oil. I find these ingredients do have purpose and contribute to my skin’s health aside from sun protection. This sunscreen doesn’t sting my face and my skin feels smoother.

UNDER MAKEUP:
It Cosmetics CC Cream glides on easily, and it doesn’t add or subtract anything about the finish.

Klairs Soft Airy UV Essence SPF 50+ PA++++ is a “cosmetically elegant” sunscreen. I’ve tried Klairs’ Mid-Day Blue Sun Lotion in the past and while I liked it, the cast is very noticeable. They finally came out with a chemical sunscreen that doesn’t have a cast, doesn’t sting my face, and feels comfortable on the skin! I also find it a great value; 80ml / 2.7 fl oz for $24-30! I definitely recommend Klairs Soft Airy UV Essence SPF 50+ PA++++ if you’ve been eyeing it.
REVIEW | Klairs Mid-day Blue Sun Lotion SPF40 / PA++

I have other new sunscreens in my collection, so stay tuned for other Sunscreen Sunday reviews!
