Neogen Dermalogy Probiotics Relief Sun Essence SPF50+ PA++++

I’ve never tried any Neogen skincare before, so I was very excited when a sunscreen was included in a generous PR package StyleKorean sent over! With all the hype around this brand, I did have an expectation for Neogen’s Dermalogy Probiotics Relief Sun Essence – that it would be a cosmetically elegant sunscreen with a ton of skin-beneficial ingredients!

INCIDecoder

Neogen Probiotics Relief Sun Essence has several types of ferments in the formula at unknown concentrations – Lactobacillus Ferment Lysate, Bifida Ferment Lysate, Streptococcus Thermophilus Ferment. Fermented ingredients claim to help strengthen the skin’s barrier by increasing its moisture levels, while offering a brightening effect and softening the skin. In my personal experience using essences with a high concentration of ferments, I find the claims to be true! Considering the Neogen Probiotics collection is all about strengthening the skin barrier, it only makes sense to include these types of ingredients in sunscreen, the ultimate barrier!

There are also molecules that are naturally found in our skin also part of this formula:

  • Glycerin, Hyaluronic Acid (there are also its derivatives) are humectants that are part of our natural moisturizing factors
  • Adenosine – helps with wound-healing and barrier repair, is also anti-inflammatory

Sugar molecules are also included which act as humectants – Xylitylglucoside, Anhydroxylitol, Xylitol, Glucose.

MY EXPERIENCE WITH NEOGEN PROBIOTICS RELIEF SUN ESSENCE

CONSISTENCY:  Gel-cream.

FRAGRANCE: Artificial sweet smell.

APPLICATION: Glides on very easily all over face and neck without issue. It almost looks like it takes on a gel form

FINISH: Glowy, it looks like there are small particles in the sunscreen that adds to the glow.

FEEL: Sometimes it stings a bit after application. Slightly greasy for initial feel, but it sets to a slight tacky finish.

STINGS EYES? Yes.

WHITECAST / TINTED? No, it does not contain any mineral filters or Tinosorb M, and it does not have an ingredient that creates a powdery film on the skin.

WATER-RESISTANT? No.

SKIN BENEFITS? Adds extra moisture to my skin.

UNDER MAKEUP: Does not add or subtract to longevity. On my drier skin type it sets to a tacky finish and I don’t produce a lot of oils or sweat.

FINAL THOUGHTS ON NEOGEN PROBIOTICS RELIEF SUN ESSENCE

PROS:

  • High protection – SPF50+ PA++++
  • Easy to apply the 2mg/cm2
  • Feels light
  • Moisturizing

CONS:

  • Stings my eyes
  • Fragrance is strong

IN-BETWEEN FEELS:

  • The shimmer – I like that they’re not glittery chunks but it also looks a bit much on the skin, especially with the amount needed to reach the protection as indicated on the label. I’m more wary of this because I have visibly textured skin, but I can see those with less texture and/or wear medium coverage foundations like this and not have a problem with it.

The Neogen Dermalogy Probiotics Relief Sun Essence is a cosmetically elegant formula – no surprises here! Shame it stings my eyes, I’m not a fan of going in with a separate SPF on my eyes purely out of slight inconvenience. Also I really wish they didn’t add shimmer particles in it, it seems like it could’ve been glowy all on its own! For those of you who wear foundation more frequently and like using a luminous primer, you may be able to eliminate that step with just this sunscreen.

Rovectin Skin Essentials Aqua Soothing UV Protector SPF50+ PA++++ – SUNSCREEN SUNDAY #14

It was quite fortunate timing when I received this sunscreen for review; A couple of weeks prior, I watched a Korean Dermatologist feature Rovectin Skin Essentials Aqua Soothing UV Protector in his daily routine. I kept it on my wishlist since then, for it looked like a 100% mineral sunscreen that would be cosmetically elegant and not casty.

All opinions are honest and my own, always *casts doe patronus*

Protection:
UVB: SPF50+
UVA: PA++++ (~PPD 16+)

INGREDIENTS:
Water, Cyclohexasiloxane, Zinc Oxide, Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891), Propanediol, Polyglyceryl-3 Polydimethylsiloxyethyl Dimethicone, Dibutyl Adipate, Niacinamide, Caprylyl Methicone, 1,2-Hexanediol, Disteardimonium Hectorite, Sorbitan Sesquioleate, Magnesium Sulfate, Hydrogen Dimethicone, Trehalose, Aluminum Hydroxide, C30-45 Alkyl Cetearyl Dimethicone Crosspolymer, Stearic Acid, Prunus Amygdalus Amara (Bitter Almond) Kernel Oil, Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract, Ethylhexylglycerin, Pyrus Malus (Apple) Leaf Extract, Octyldodecanol, Adenosine, Vanilla Planifolia Fruit Extract, Jasminum Officinale (Jasmine) Flower Extract, Echium Plantagineum Seed Oil, Salvia Hispanica Seed Extract, Centella Asiatica Extract, Houttuynia Cordata Extract, Fructooligosaccharides, Saccharide Hydrolysate, Pullulan, Cardiospermum Halicacabum Flower/Leaf/Vine Extract, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil Unsaponifiables, Biosaccharide Gum-4, Polyglyceryl-2 Dipolyhydroxystearate, Undecane, Tridecane, Tocopherol, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil

INCIDecoder

Rovectin Aqua Soothing UV Protector seems to be an emollient-rich formula that contains a nice variety of additional skin-beneficial ingredients, mostly a blend of antioxidant and soothing ingredients, aslo performing as humectants to add to the moisturizing aspect of the formula.

Green Tea, Centella Asiatica, Houttuynia Cordata Extract – Antioxidant and soothing plant extracts
Niacinamide – Antioxidant, brightens, minimizes pores and fine lines, anti-inflammatory, increases skin’s lipid production
Adenosine – wound-healing, anti-inflammatory
Tocopherol – Antioxidant
Trehalose, Fructooligoshaccarides, Saccharide Hydrolysate, Sunflower Seed Oil and its Unsaponifiables – moisturizing

Although this formula claims to be fragrance-free on Wishtrend’s website, there is definitely a notable scent in this sunscreen. My guess is it’s coming from ingredients like the Bitter Almond Kernel oil and Jasmine Flower Extract, both probably have fragrant components.

MY EXPERIENCE WITH ON ROVECTIN SKIN ESSENTIALS AQUA SOOTHING UV PROTECTOR SPF50+ PA++++

PACKAGING:  Opaque white plastic tube with small spout, twist off cap.

CONSISTENCY:  Light cream.

FRAGRANCE: Light, sweet scent.

APPLICATION: Glides on very easily with a light touch.

FINISH: Slightly glowy.

FEEL: Emollient and tacky.

STINGS EYES? No.

WHITECAST/TINTED? Yes, there is a whitecast.

WATER RESISTANT? No.

SKIN BENEFITS? I like that it doesn’t dry out my skin and feels fairly comfortable. My skin does look brighter when I use this, but it’s unfortunately paired with a noticable cast.

UNDER MAKEUP: Grips onto foundation, but I noticed when I used the Missha M Perfect Cover BB Cream, the SPF made it look a bit cakey. With a thin layer (say if I were to layer sunscreens and use this as the last layer), a thin, light coverage foundation will look better, but you can still see some of the cast through it, so best to use this sunscreen as a thin layer under a medium to full coverage foundation.

FINAL THOUGHTS ON ON ROVECTIN SKIN ESSENTIALS AQUA SOOTHING UV PROTECTOR SPF50+ PA++++

PROS:

  • Highest protection you can find in Asian sunscreens – SPF50+ PA++++
  • Feels comfortable with the required amount (2mg/cm2)
  • Does not dry out my skin
  • Does not look chalky

CONS:

  • Cast
  • Base makeup won’t look good when I use the required amount (2mg/cm2)

Rovectin Skin Essentials Aqua Soothing Protector is true to its claim (on the packaging) that this is a nice mineral sunscreen for drier skin types. However that’s where it stops for me, overall I didn’t really enjoy using this sunscreen and don’t like reaching for it unless I need it for my hands. The only time I liked this sunscreen was with a thin layer, under the required amount for me to achieve the SPF indicated on the label. Even then, I still looked a bit grey and casty even with a light coverage foundation over top. I prefer the Klairs Mid Day Blue UV Shield because I can use the required amount and it looks good under my preferred makeup base.

SUNSCREEN SUNDAY [#13]: Cell Fusion C Post Alpha Cure Sunscreen 100 SPF50+ PA++++

Cell Fusion C is a Korean medical skincare brand that formulates products specifically targeted to those that had a laser or chemical treatment. This is a #YoutubeMadeMeBuyIt moment from Beauty Cloud Una – I never would have heard of the brand or have an interest in trying their Post Alpha Cure Sunscreen 100 SPF50+ PA++++ until she raved about it being on of her faves!

I like how this sunscreen has 6 different filters in the formula to ensure full UV protection (UVB, UVAII, UVAI). The key ingredient in the formula is Guaiazulene, which makes the formula blue and has a calming and soothing effect. This also contains fatty lipids Ceramide NP and Cholesterol, which are skin-identical ingredients that serve as emollients.

PACKAGING:  Opaque blue plastic tube with small spout.

PROS:

  • Highest protection you can find in Asian sunscreens – SPF50+ PA++++
  • Very easy to apply the 2mg/cm2
  • Feels light and gentle
  • Calms skin

CONS:

  • Stings eyes a lot
  • Price

FINAL THOUGHTS ON CELL FUSION C POST ALPHA CURE SUNSCREEN 100 SPF50+ PA++++

Cell Fusion C Post Alpha Cure Sunscreen 100 SPF50+ PA++++ was overall a very pleasant experience and I’m glad that a Youtube recommendation came through. If you can get a hold of it and don’t mind the price per ml, I think you will enjoy it. I purchased 2 on eBay at the time with the price under $40 USD so my wallet wasn’t crying too much. Otherwise I wouldn’t go out of my way to purchase it again since I have easier access to other sunscreens that offer the same or more protection here in Canada.

SUNSCREEN SUNDAY [#12]: Purito Centella Green Level Unscented Sun SPF50+ PA++++

Purito is one of the more popular Korean skincare brands I keep hearing on the market, and lots and lots of people rave about their sunscreens! I picked up the Purito Centella Green Level Unscented Sun SPF50+ PA++++ – the most recommended one out of their 3 sunscreens, and the most compared to Klairs Soft Airy UV Essence SPF50+ PA++++.

INFORMATION ON PURITO CENTELLA GREEN LEVEL UNSCENTED SUN SPF50+ PA++++

If you couldn’t use sunscreen because you were put off by its strong scent or because your skin doesn’t take well to natural essential oils, you should try the new PURITO Centella Unscented Sun. Use the highly concentrated super centella and enjoy cica-care with an increased content of madecassoside. The new cica-care enhances the skin barrier to provide better protection from strong ultraviolet rays and external stimuli.

The product contains mild and safe ingredients that helps to avoid side effects of the existing chemical sunscreens such as eye and skin irritation. It doesn’t cause any discomfort, even when applied to sensitive skin. If applying sunscreen before makeup was a burden because of the white cast and the stifling feeling, PURITO Centella Unscented is the right product for you, as it spreads in a thin, transparent layer and doesn’t leave a heavy finish on the skin.

– Puritoen.com

Price: $18-20 USD
Amount: 60 ml

UV FILTERS:

Type: Organic
Diethylamino Hydroxybenzoyl Hexyl Benzoate – Uvinul A Plus (3%)
Ethylhexyl Triazone – Uvinul T 150 (2%)
Protection:
UVB: SPF50+ (~SPF60)
UVA: PA++++ – PPD 22.59

INGREDIENTS:
Water, Butylene Glycol, Butyloctyl Salicylate, Glycerin, Diethylamino Hydroxybenzoyl Hexyl Benzoate, Hydrogenated Polyisobutene, Acrylates Copolymer, Silica, 1,2-Hexanediol, Niacinamide, Dibutyl Adipate, Ethylhexyl Triazone, Polyglyceryl-3 Methylglucose Distearate, Cetearyl Olivate, Cetearyl Alcohol, Dicaprylyl Carbonate, Sorbitan Olivate, Glyceryl Stearate, Methyl Glucose Sesquistearate, Sorbitan Stearate, Centella Asiatica Extract(4315ppm), Madecassoside, Asiaticoside, Madecassic Acid, Asiatic Acid, Pentaerythrityl Tetra-di-t-butyl Hydroxyhydrocinnamate, Disodium EDTA, Adenosine, Hyaluronic Acid, Caprylyl Glycol, Ethylhexylglycerin, Tocopherol

INCIDecoder

Niacinamide and Tocopherol are always a great ingredients to have, especially in a sunscreen for additional protection against the formation of free radicals. Glycerin and Hyaluronic Acid are also found on the list for humectant properties. Centella Asiatica Extract and it’s constituents Madecassoside, Asiaticoside, Madecassic Acid, Asiatic Acid are also in the formula – their skin benefits range from wound-healing, anti-inflammatory, and an antioxidant. Centella Asiatica is one of my favourite supportive ingredients for those of us with troubled skin. My skin always feels calmer and less irritated when I use a product with this ingredient. I find it a great addition to a sunscreen for it to help keep my skin calm and prevent it from becoming over-heated from summer weather.

MY EXPERIENCE WITH PURITO CENTELLA GREEN LEVEL UNSCENTED SUN SPF50+ PA++++

PACKAGING:  Opaque white plastic tube with small spout.

CONSISTENCY:  Gel-cream, leaning more on the cream.

FRAGRANCE: None.

APPLICATION: Glides on very easily with a light touch. While applying, it appears white on the skin but it fades as it’s blended in.

FINISH: Glowy, when I touch my skin it feels like there’s an oily residue.

wp-1593965825186.jpg

FEEL: Neutral. I find that despite the moisturized look, I can’t rely on this as a moisturizing SPF, even in the summertime.

STINGS EYES? No.

WHITECAST / TINTED? No.

WATER RESISTANT? No.

SKIN BENEFITS? My skin feels very comfortable when I use it and rarely stings. Even if my skin feels particularly sensitive, I find this SPF doesn’t exacerbate the irritation and calms any redness.

UNDER MAKEUP: I like using it as my tester sunscreen for under makeup, because the finish is similar to my moisturizer. It doesn’t take away my foundation’s longevity, but it doesn’t add to it like a mineral SPF would.

PROS:

  • Highest protection you can find in Asian sunscreens – SPF50+ PA++++
  • Very easy to apply the 2mg/cm2
  • Feels comfortable
  • Purito shares the percentage of UV Filters as well as the PPD value

IN-BETWEEN FEELS:

  • I find the finish sometimes too oily
  • I feel like I used it less than 30 times and I’m almost done the 60ml tube; I could have over applied while using it

FINAL THOUGHTS ON PURITO CENTELLA GREEN LEVEL UNSCENTED SUN SPF50+ PA++++

True to the hype, the Purito Centella Green Level Unscented Sun SPF50+ PA++++ is indeed an awesome sunscreen! Whether or not it’s better than the Klairs Soft Airy UV Essence, I like both of them for completely different reasons. I like Purito Centella Green Level Unscented Sun for it being more on the emollient side, non-sensitizing, and containing Centella Asiatica constituents. Klairs Soft Airy UV Essence is in a larger tube for just a few more dollars, and I find myself reaching for it more for reapplication because of it’s gel-cream texture leaning on the more gel side. I find any skin type would be happy with either depending how your overall morning skincare routine is.

SUNSCREEN SUNDAY #11: Klairs Mid Day Blue UV Shield SPF50+ PA++++

This item was sent for review purposes.

Years ago I reviewed the 1st version of Klairs Mid-Day Blue Sun Lotion SPF40 PA++. They came out with a 2nd version a year or so later which I also tried, and now they have the 3rd! Klairs Mid Day Blue UV Shield SPF50+ PA++++.

This Sunscreen Sunday deserved a little intro blurb because I am very excited to discover how far this mineral sunscreen has come along since its beginnings!

INFORMATION ON KLAIRS MID DAY BLUE UV SHIELD SPF50+ PA++++

wp-1590252609190.jpg

This physical sunscreen is hydrating, lightweight, non-irritant, and gentle for any skin type, even sensitive skin. It is SPF 50/PA++++ and contains zinc oxide and titanium dioxide to protect your skin against UVA/UVB. By containing guaiazulene it also helps calm the skin. It has a natural tone-up effect after application with a semi-matte finish. Recommended for combination and oily skin.

– Wishtrend

Klairs is finally back with the newest updated version and it is called the Mid day Blue UV Shield! Get excited because compared to the previous versions, it has now become even 1) fresher, 2) smoother to apply on the skin, 3) more hydrating on the skin with a semi-matte finish, and 4) still remains to give a significant calming effect for irritated skin under the strong UV rays.

– Wishtrend blog post

Price: $23 USD
Amount: 80 ml

UV FILTERS:

Type: Mineral
Zinc Oxide – Unknown
Titanium Dioxide – Unknown

Protection:
UVB: SPF50+ (~SPF60)
UVA: PA++++ (>PPD 16)

HIGHLIGHT INGREDIENTS (skinthusiast perspective):
Guaiazulene – what makes the formula blue! Has been described as a calming, soothing ingredient due to it being derived from the chamomile plant. INCIDecoder however lists this ingredient as antimicrobial/perfuming
Tocopherol – antioxidant
Comparing the 3rd version’s ingredients list to the first formulation, I can’t help but be a little sad. The first original formula had a handful of nice ingredients in it (Niacinamide, Panthenol, Arginine, Sodium Hyaluronate, Centella Asiatica Extract, Acetyl Hexapeptide-8, Tinosorb S!).
However I see why they have simplified the formula. Mineral sunscreens in general are recommended to those with sensitive skin, so a reduction in ingredients means less likelihood of problems. Niacinamide for example is one of my favourite ingredients of all time, and some people cannot tolerate it at all.
To add to the sensitive skin note – this does have fragrance. However on Wishtrend’s Instagram, they have answered that it is formulated with allergen free fragrance and it has been tested on sensitive skin.
wp-1590254728479..jpg
I personally don’t mind fragrance in products, as long as it’s
1. Not overwhelming
2. I’m using one fragrance included product in my routine
This sunscreen also has a few silicone ingredients in it. I don’t know about you, but the smell of silicone to me is not pleasant at all!

MY EXPERIENCE WITH KLAIRS MID DAY BLUE UV SHIELD SPF50+ PA++++

PACKAGING:  Opaque blue plastic tube with small spout.

CONSISTENCY:  Thick cream, but not heavy.

FRAGRANCE: Light, candy-corn scent. I have no other way to describe it other than it smells candy sweet, but corny? It isn’t offensive and it fades.

APPLICATION: Need to work it into the skin in order for it to spread well. The first time I used this I applied my standard amount too much at once and it looked REALLY weird and I definitely saw a blue cast. The second time I applied it in thin layers, and it looked MUCH better, but it seems to always pill around my hairline.

FINISH: Semi-matte. It isn’t flat, and I have a skin like finish on my face.

wp-1590252609131.jpg

FEEL: Slightly greasy. This has a handful of silicones in the formulation, and on my face it feels as if I applied something oily. When it has time to set, it feels slightly tacky. It is slightly drying around my eyes.

STINGS EYES? No.

WHITECAST / TINTED? I’m confused as to whether or not I’m mistaking the “tone up” claim of this product as a minimal cast, or vice versa. I see this “tone up” effect where my skin does look brighter and even. There is no obvious whitecast, but there is some sort of blue going on. When I look at myself in certain lighting, there is a blue sheen on my skin. I also find on my neck, which has a more distinct undertone, seems to neutralize in colour.

WATER RESISTANT? No.

SKIN BENEFITS? Klairs claims that it is hydrating, but I don’t find it adds any extra moisture. Because it has a semi-matte finish, I find it can feel a little drying, but not uncomfortable. I don’t find this “instantly” calming, but what’s good is that it doesn’t irritate my skin and it keeps my skin collected in the warmer weather.

UNDER MAKEUP: Like other mineral sunscreens I have tried, it’s good at gripping on to makeup so I can see this performing well under foundations. When I tried it with my Mac Face & Body, my skin looked way more bright and even than usual.

PROS:

  • Highest protection you can find in Asian sunscreens – SPF50+ PA++++.
  • Feels gentle and fairly light considering how much I apply.
  • Good amount of product for the price.
  • “Tone up” aspect – brightens and evens complexion.
  • For the most part, I feel comfortable wearing it on its own.

CONS:

  • Pills around my hairline a lot.

IN-BETWEEN FEELS:

  • Not-so-easy application; It is not streaky, but it’s not as effortless as the Soft Airy UV Essence, and on my normal to dry skin it has the potential to pick up dry flakes more easily. However because the weather is warmer, I can work with it better.
  • I like the semi-matte finish, especially during these warmer months, but it can feel a bit drying. Not uncomfortable, but I notice it.
  • While I like the brightening and evening perks of the “tone up”, it constantly makes me question if there is actually a cast. I have this problem with mineral sunscreens in general so it’s not like the Klairs one is unique in that regard. That being said, if you’re my shade (light-medium) or darker, you may prefer this more underneath makeup instead of on its own.
  • While this is advertised more for our oily-skinned peeps, it does feel tacky on my skin for a bit. Not sticky, but tacky.

FINAL THOUGHTS ON KLAIRS MID DAY BLUE UV SHIELD SPF50+ PA++++

Klairs Mid Day Blue UV Shield has had its rounds, and I like that overall the 3rd version has the least bit of cast and has a higher protection. I personally prefer sunscreens that have either hybrid (mineral-organic) or pure organic UV filters, but I found the Klairs Mid Day Blue UV Shield overall enjoyable to use and I like reaching for it.
